The Sri Lanka rupee (abbreviation
Rs or LKR) is presently (December, 2000) at around 83 to the US$, down from
Rs 50 in 1994. Visa and MasterCard are accepted almost everywhere in Sri Lanka,
though some smaller establishments will take only cash. Banks and moneychangers
are plentiful, and it is best to carry part of your financial needs in U.S.
dollar travelers’ checks (Thomas Cook and American Express are widely accepted).
Foreign-exchange regulations are lax, and for the purposes of tourism, cause little inconvenience. Many international banks have offices in Colombo, including American Express, Hong Kong & Shanghai and ANZ.
