Sri Lanka’s healthcare is provided by both public and private sectors.
The public sector provides healthcare for nearly 60% of the population, and provides the entire range of preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare provisions.
Western, Ayurvedic, Unani, Sidda and homeopathy systems of medicine practiced in Sri Lanka.
The public sector comprises Western and Ayurvedic Medicine.
The health services of the Government functions under a cabinet Minister, assisted by two Deputy Ministers.
The Ministry of Health (Central Government) is primarily responsible for the protection and promotion of peoples’ health.

In 1989 Health Services were devolved, resulting in the Ministry of Health at the national level and separate Provincial Ministries of Health in the eight provinces.
23 Deputy Provincial Directors of Health Services (DPDHS) assist the eight Provincial Directors of Health Services.
Each DPDHS areas are sub divided into several Divisional Directors of Health Services areas (DDHS/MOH).
DDHS/MOH is responsible for the preventive and promotional healthcare in a defined area.
The network of curative care institutions range from sophisticated Teaching Hospitals with specialized consultative services to small central dispensaries.
The distinction between hospital is basically made on the size and the range of facilities provided.
Basically there are three levels of curative care institutions.
Teaching and special hospitals (Tertiary care)
Base and Provincial Hospitals (Secondary care)
Central Dispensaries, Maternity Homes, Rural Hospitals, Peripheral Units and District Hospitals (Primary care)
