Landscape and climate

65,000 sq. km. in extent, Sri Lanka is a warm tropical island situated 6º north of the equator. The south-western part of the island experiences high rainfall (2,500-4,000 mm/yr), the rest of the island being relatively dry. Rainfall is monsoonal, the south-west monsoon lasting from June to September, while a north-east monsoon lasts from December to March. The south-western part of the country derives rain from both monsoons (and therefore supports rainforest), whereas the island’s ‘dry zone’, served only by the north-east monsoon, with rainfall of 1,5002,000 mm/yr is nevertheless remarkably green and in many parts, densely forested. The center of the island is occupied by a mountain mass which rises to around 2,400 m altitude.

Demography

The population of Sri Lanka is around 18.5 million, of which about 74% are Sinhalese and speak the national language Sinhala (which is derived from the ancient Indian Sanskrit). Tamils, who speak a language of that name from India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu, account for 12.6%. A further 5.5% are ‘Tamils of recent origin’, being the descendants of south Indian migrant laborers who came to work the British tea and rubber plantations in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The balance 7.9% is made up of Moors (7.1%, of the Moslem faith), ‘Burghers’ (0.8%), the descendants of the Dutch settlers in Sri Lanka. Population growth is presently around 1.1% p.a., down from 1.8% twenty years ago and the lowest in the South Asian region.
