Buddhism, the state religion, is practiced by 69.3% of the population, while 15.5% (mainly Tamils) are Hindus. Roman Catholics (deriving from the Portuguese influence in the island) are a large and influential minority of 7.5%, Protestants accounting for a further 7.6%. Almost all the Moors practice Islam (7.5%).  By and large there is considerable amity and tolerance between the various groups, and incidents of friction are rare.

A lone Buddhist monk on a jungle path: solitude, introspection and meditation are important ingredients of the Buddhist way of life.

Hindu temples display some of the finest art and sculpture, usually representative of ancient legends.

Some 15% of Sri Lankans belong to the Hindu faith, one of the world’s oldest religions. Here, a devotee at a Hindu ceremony.

With the advent of Portuguese traders— later to be colonists— in the early 16th century came Roman Catholicism. Grand churches built in the succeeding four centuries are still worshipped in by Sri Lanka’s important and influential Catholic minority.
