Socio-economic profile

With a per capita GNP of just  US$ 800 per annum, Sri Lanka is not a rich country. Nevertheless, thanks to a benign system of government and a caring social service system, the quality of life is remarkably high (life expectancy at birth, males: 69.5 yrs; females: 74.2 yrs). There is a comprehensive poverty alleviation program which provides for the essential needs of the poorest segment of the community, while health and education (primary through university) are completely free and universally available. Infant mortality (16.3 per 1,000 live births) is among the lowest in Asia. All schoolchildren receive free textbooks and school uniforms, underlining the importance the nation attaches to education. Thanks to this enlightened policy, Sri Lankans enjoy one of the highest adult literacy rates in Asia (over 92%).

Way of life

Sri Lankans are a relaxed people who like to take life as it comes. Although as everywhere in the world the cities contain their share of aggressive men and women of commerce, the country is by the standards of many western nations, ‘laid back’. Many visitors think this charming, while a few no doubt find it annoying. Nevertheless, Sri Lankans are an extremely hospitable people, invariably friendly to visitors.
